to\u202fWestern Power Distribution<\/li>\n<li>The company will\u202fuse pioneering energy management technology \u2013 Tribe \u2013 to unlock flexibility in\u202fenergy assets within residential properties<\/li>\n<li>Lightsource\u202fLabs will be deploying new\u202fand existing\u202fassets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lightsource Labs, an energy technology business wholly owned by global solar company Lightsource bp, today announces\u202fits first commercial partnerships with Distribution Network Operators in the UK. The company will\u202fdeliver 1.8MW of local flexibility to UK Power\u202fNetworks,\u202fand a further\u202f15kW\u202fto\u202fWestern\u202fPower\u202fDistribution (WPD).\u202fThese flexibility services will\u202fhelp\u202falleviate constraints on the\u202frespective\u202fdistribution networks\u202fduring\u202ftimes of\u202funusually high\u202f\u2018peak\u202fdemand\u2019\u202fby either shifting demand away from\u202fthese\u202fpeak\u202fperiods or\u202fturning up generation.<\/p>\n<p>The services supplied to UK\u202fPower Networks\u202fwill be across\u202f20\u202fzones in and around London, and will be delivered from 2021 to 2028, and the services to WPD will be\u202facross 3\u202fconstrained zones in Coventry, Witheridge and Ledbury from 2021 to 2022.<\/p>\n<h4>Cutting-edge\u202fenergy management technology<\/h4>\n<p>Lightsource Labs will\u202futilise\u202fits energy management technology \u2013 Tribe \u2013\u202finstalled\u202fin\u202fresidential properties\u202fwithin each zone\u202fto deliver the contracted flexibility services.\u202f\u202fTribe will connect to either existing or new\u202fgeneration and storage\u202fassets\u202fwithin the properties,\u202fincluding solar PV, batteries and electric vehicle charging points.<\/p>\n<p>In each zone Tribe\u2019s AI technology will optimise schedules of the connected storage assets and loads\u202fto ensure there is enough capacity reserved to reduce the evening peak demand. The systems will aggregate\u202finto Lightsource Labs\u2019 Virtual Power Plant (VPP) to respond to UK\u202fPower Networks\u202fand WPD\u2019s dispatch signals and schedules for flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking\u202fabout the new\u202fflexibility\u202fcontracts, Benjamin\u202fKott, CEO at Lightsource Labs, commented that<em>\u202f\u201cUsing our innovative energy management technology to deliver\u202flocal\u202fflexibility services to UK Power Networks and\u202fWPD is a breakthrough moment for Lightsource Labs. While our technology is designed to optimise assets to maximise solar self-consumption within the property to reduce energy bills, there\u2019s clearly significant demand side response value it can provide Distribution Network Operators and other utility partners outside the home. We\u2019re looking forward to helping UK\u00a0Power\u202fNetworks and WPD operate more resilient grid networks and to unlock more value from distributed energy assets for our customers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Flexibility first approach<\/h4>\n<p>The\u202ftotal electricity demand\u202fis\u202fset to increase over the next decade\u202f\u2013 and with that the size of weekday evening peak demand. UK\u202fPower Networks\u202fand WPD,\u202fare taking\u202fa \u2018Flexibility First\u2019 approach,\u202fand are\u202ftherefore working with technology and flexibility providers like Lightsource Labs to smooth the demand peaks and reduce the impact they have on their networks\u202fhelping them\u202favoid or defer network reinforcements and expensive upgrading works.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs we look to decarbonise the system while ensuring grid stability,\u201d<\/em> said\u202fEvangelos\u202fKaragiannis, Power System Engineer for UK\u202fPower Networks, <em>\u201cwe need to work with partners like Lightsource Labs to deliver demand-side flexibility. Lightsource Labs\u2019 technology can balance both customer and network needs and provide value to both.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Helen Sawdon, Flexible Power Commercial Officer,\u202fsaid that\u202f<em>\u201cWPD\u202fare committed to continue providing a reliable and efficient electricity network to our customers. As we continue to connect more generation and low carbon technologies onto our network and manage increases in electricity demand due to the take up in electric vehicles and heating, the procurement of demand-side flexibility services from providers such as Lightsource Labs are key to supporting our effective operation of the electricity distribution\u202fsystem.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lightsource Labs will be installing Tribe alongside new and existing energy assets to deliver the flexibility services to\u202fUK Power Networks, working\u202fwith channel partners to start recruiting and installing Tribe\u202ftechnology from\u202fMay,\u202fwith first services due to be delivered to UK\u202fPower Networks\u202fin November.
