Lightsource bp\u2019s 255<\/span><\/span>MW <\/span>Desert Pine<\/span><\/span> Solar <\/span><\/span>and Storage<\/span><\/span>\u00a0project<\/span> is currently in early development <\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span>El Paso County, Texas<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> The privately funded $255<\/span><\/span>\u00a0million <\/span>renewable<\/span> energy <\/span>project includes 75MW of planned energy storage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

By engaging local stakeholders, supporting economic development and aligning with community-driven philanthropic goals, we aim to create projects that not only generate renewable energy but deliver meaningful long-term benefits to the people and places we serve. Since 2023, we have contributed more than $900,000 to local schools and non-profits across the United States.<\/p>\n

Desert Pine Solar and Storage is projected to generate approximately 350 jobs during its construction phase and contribute over $80 million in new tax revenue to the local government throughout its operational lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n

How solar farms work<\/h2>\n
\n\n

Solar farms add energy to the local electric grid, just like other electric power plants. Rows of solar panels produce the electricity, which flows through the grid to power places like homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n

Solar panels are mounted on structures called racking. Racking sits on posts that raise the panels above the ground, on posts that take up less than 5% of the land. With significant open space under the panels, in the rows and in buffer areas to plant site-specific grasses and other vegetation, we set a goal of\u202fincreasing biodiversity<\/a>\u202fin the first 5 years of operation. We also\u202fintegrate agriculture<\/a>\u202fwhere practical.<\/p>\n

The racking is equipped with smart solar trackers that slowly and quietly rotate throughout the day, following the sun to maximize solar energy production. These\u202fsmart trackers serve other important purposes<\/a>, too: they help protect solar panels from hailstorms, high winds and buildup of snow on solar panels.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n
